afternoon ramblings...

its funny how when i look back on decisions ive made in life, it seems that the reasoning behind them was quite immature, perhaps even rash. if i went back i time and had to face those dilemmas again, would i chose the same paths or would my additional experience guide me to better decisions? but perhaps this realization in itself is a good sign. it would be a catastrophe if i looked back and found that compared to the past i was actually less mature! i guess every man has to reach that stage too. when you stop growing mentally and facultatively and realize that youve become the proverbial "over the hill " old man...circling the drain...whatever...

PAK Navy Cheetahs in New York

I had no idea that our naval ships were docked at New York so imagine our surprise when me, sam and boree ran into these guys on fifth av. (boree's in the pic too though u miss him on first glance!) These guys were amazing...they had been at sea so long that they were almost happier to see us than we were to see them. I hope they found the desi food they were looking for.

reverse sweep

The Pakistanis have invaded the Carribean! 3 ODI's and 2 tests! After the awesome annihilation of the Indians, Inzi's 11 will conquer the west indies. True they didnt score much in the first match and inzi's batting form is worrying, but they are playing as a team and winning, so, its all good.
I dont think ive missed many pakistan cricket matches over the last 20 odd years. pak vs. england in the '87 world cup; the matches in the '96 world cup; ofcourse pak vs india in 2004 and a dozen others in between. Especially memorable was the first game in the new pindi stadium in '92: pak vs srilanka where inzi scored a magnificent hundred. cheering him on were me , umar, hammad butt and alvi in the scorching sun, occupying seats that we had not really paid for, braving the occasional teargas-saturated breeze that was being used to disperse the gate crashers. with tears in our eyes and throats hoarse from shouting, we cheered, booed and poondied away a hundred overs. the highpoint of the day was definitely the fact that we got to see imran khan, wasim akram and actually meet waqar younis. Though i must admit that the sight of ijaz prodding waqars butt with a bat is something that i would rather forget!
That is what cricket has been for me. good times with friends and family. if not at the stadium then in front of the t.v. on lazy summer afternoons. But that is something that i appreciate now...now that i have to log on to cricinfo and read the ball-by-ball account, imagining the cover-drives, hook shots and reverse sweeps. with some of the most glorious performances played out in my minds eye, i am destined never to be witness to them.
